ODE TO THE "KIRKING OF THE CORNET" written by Rev. Dr. Bruce Gardner 2009 (DCM. Tune "I heard the voice of Jesus say")
Frae Ancient times, the dingin' Sword Did haunt Auld Scotland's ways Guid men could get nae sleep o nichts Fur dreams o darkened days. Ilk man slept wi a dirk tae haund, His saddle by his bed: Syne, savin' bairns and land, they rade Whaur Scotland's heroes led.
Noo, Lauderdale, ye Queen o Grace, Yer bairns sleep, safe and weel, Yer gentle mither's airms, the hills, Lie roond us like a shield: The Leader rins wi maiden joy, Like ribbons on yer goun: As Virgin Mary guards her Son, The Kirk maun mind the Toun.
Aye may the Haly Wurd o God Bliss Riders roond the Cross, The Kirkit Cornet's standard hail The Warrior's luve--and loss. O Christ Oor King, Ye ride oot strang Wi aa wha luve Ye best! "Safe oot! Safe In!" wull be oor proyer Till hame--and hert--find rest!
